Water Connect 2015

Water experts from around Europe poured into Peterborough for Water Connect 2015.This one day conference and networking event took place at Future Business Centre Peterborough on 8th July.

The event was co-hosted by Opportunity Peterborough and the Global Sustainability Institute at Anglia Ruskin University as part of the Water Efficiency in European Urban Areas (WE@EU) project, which looks to improve water efficiency and urban water management.

Keynote speaker, Ashley Roe, Chief Executive of British Water, said: “We do not value water in the same way as other things that we take for granted, like energy and telecoms. It’s a huge educational issue. Water will become a source of conflict as it becomes more scarcely available.”

The East of England is one of the most water-stressed regions in Europe. It is likely to face challenges and water shortages over the next 20 years due to significant changes in rainfall patterns. However, every challenge presents opportunities.

Tom Hennessy, Senior Economic Development Manager at Opportunity Peterborough, says “As the city’s economic development company, we believe in supporting our businesses and growing our economy. Water Connect provided a great opportunity for businesses from the region to broaden their networks, meet organisations from all over Europe, and find potential partners for future collaboration. It’s been fantastic learning about these emerging technologies in the water sector and it’s really great to welcome these leaders in innovation to Peterborough, and it’s great for Peterborough to be at the heart of this industry.”

Attendees were also encouraged to sign up to The Water Cluster, a free website and network which provides a platform for entities with an interest in water and innovation to enter into a dialogue and identify opportunities for potential collaboration.
